Wooden Religious Structures

group research

For several years, I have worked with Handshouse Studio to examine the architectural and cultural history surrounding 17th and 18th century wooden synagogues in Eastern Europe. Since all of these structures were destroyed in World War II, our research involves the examination and documentation of other wooden religious buildings from the same periods and geographic locations. This research has led us to Poland twice and has resulted in the creation of a traveling exhibit of our models, drawings and other findings. The exhibition, "Wooden Synagogues: A Lost World Revisited", has been shown in academic and Jewish culture organizations across the United States and continues to grow.
